Boy Next Door's Boswell says you can get away with shorts on a lunch date but just stick with something fun like a plaid pair of Ben Shermans with a solid shirt. That's a 60 or 70 dollar look for a nice lunch date if you're going down the street to Hobnob or sitting outside at Cowtippers.

Going high-end for your dinner date? Boykin says slide a light blazer over a light button-up, then add a slim slack and a loafer. Boswell's call is a short-sleeve, light cotton Ben Sherman knit (they're nice and dressy without being too dressy) with white denim jeans from Division E.

What about the woman with nothing to wear? Shelton's picks for lunch are kneeshorts with a tank top and a pair of espadrilles. It's a nice summer shoe and it always makes your legs look nice.

For dinner, Boykin says go navy in a solid simple dress and accessorize with a crazy handbag. Shelton says the right to bare arms at a nice restaurant is limited, so wear a pashmina or a little shrug with that delish dress.



But no matter the details of the date, from casual to formal, color is key. The hot women's colors maybe magenta, yellow, blue and especially teal says Boykin. As for the boys, Boswell's banking on orange, purple, and sky blue.

Please welcome Teri Thorson (42) as the one that had a great experience in online dating.

I tried three different online dating sites, one free and two paid. On the free one, I wrote in my profile that I was in a wheelchair, for the paid ones I did not mention anything until some contact was made. I wanted to see if this would make any difference in the type of guy that was attracted to me. I chose the free site for full disclosure in my profile as I knew I would have to sort through a lot more profiles than on the paid ones, which make the matches for you based on personality questionnaire.

In the end, I did have to weed out a lot more profiles from the free site. But, I did go on more dates. All in all, it didn't seem to matter if my profile said that I was in a chair or not. Both approaches provided me with the same match results, the same types of men interested in me.

Although none of those matches from online dating resulting in a relationship, I met some new, interesting and nice people. you just never know where you will find them, or what a random online message might bring. And I believe it's important to get yourself out there and practice dating so you're ready when you meet the right one for you.

Interestingly, I did meet my husband on a social media site. I had moved to Victoria and only knew a couple of people. I was looking to make some new connections, so I turned to Myspace, and that's how we met. We're no longer together, but our wonderful son turned five this year.

Are they making you feel uncomfortable? Are they confessing their love too quickly, or pressuring you to leave the dating site and chat through private messaging? Remember, it's the internet, it isn't rude to be up front. Stand your ground, or simply don't respond. Be your own advocate.

Do their photos look suspiciously professional? Googling "reverse image search" can show you how to check if their private photos exist elsewhere online. If you have their name, look them up on social media. Are they who they say they are? Some people are great at crafting personas and fake profiles on Facebook. Check your facts and tread lightly.

Play it safe.

If you decide you want to meet in person, do so in a public place, or with friends. Are things not going as you hoped? Pick up your phone and use the old standby: "What? There's a family emergency? OK... I'll be right there".

After two disasters, third time's a charm!

Meet another great people named Danny Sloan (43) that wants to share his experience about online dating. At age 27, my disability introduced me to the world of computers. I had all this free time and got immersed in chat rooms. One attraction was that it was a safe way to socialize, I could enter a chat room, and nobody would know I had a condition.

I soon realized that not everybody was who they said they were. There was manipulation and toying with hopes. One woman was passing herself off as actress Katie Holmes, she turned out to be a 52-year-old cake decorator from the UK.

I've never lied; and although I didn't always disclosure I had a disability right away, I would when it was necessary, usually early on. About 10 years ago, and four years post injury, I discovered some disabled dating websites. I also met people through Yahoo disability support groups and found out what devotees are. I wavered between dating able-bodied people and dating someone with a disability.

My first trip to meet someone I met online was an absolute disaster. She was a California girl I met on a US-based disabled dating site. As my visit progressed, it became increasingly uncomfortable. I think we had gotten too close before we met, and since the expectation were high, it all fell apart.

The second trip, to Englad, was just as bad. This girl was intriguing, yet somewhat mysterious. When I arrived, I realized why, she hadn't disclosed she had a form of spinal collapse and her life expectancy was only about 40 years. If I had known about it, I might have accepted it. But being surprised with it? I discovered soon after that her life was actually quite chaotic. The first night we went out, her sisters got into a bar brawl, with a prostitute. Again, I moved on.

There's not a lot of traffic on disability online dating sites. You can make a profile and let it sit there, checking in once in a while. Because your condition is out in the open, you don't have to worry about when and how to reveal it (often, an non-disabled dating sites, when my condition got disclosed, and if things were going well, you had to mention it or else you were leading people on, I would get shot down. It hurt.)

I met my wife on a Russian disabled dating website. I was on three sites; the other two were in UK and the US (the disabled community is so much smaller, so you have to open that net wide). She approached me. When I checked her out, she didn't appear to have a disability. But I could tell that her photo wasn't professional, which can be a giveaway for dating cheats. I got the feeling that she wasn't out to deceive me and we immediately hit it off. It turned out she had alupecia, a protein deficiency causing her hair not to grow properly.

She was from Tunisia, and The Arab Spring had begun there a year earlier. She got tear-gassed; she grew up in a police state. I love politics and history, so we had lots to talk about.

Eventually, I went over and met her in person. She turned out to be shy, beautiful, witty and moralistic. However, she had not dated a lot, and she took a risk in her culture by dating a non-Muslim. She rented an apartment for me and we spent a lot of time together. I stayed for several months, and she came more alive as I got to know her. She wasn't looking for a ticket out, that had been a concern, because I wanted it to be genuine.

We got married in Istanbul four months after meeting. A few months later I came home. My wife worked in Kuwait as she awaited immigration. We were apart a year before we reunited.

I'm not embarrassed to have met my wife online. That said, I think it's so much easier for someone with a disability to meet someone in person, if they decide to date in the able-bodied world. It's easier to explore differences in person. Online, there's too much choice, and it's too rapid. There are just too many people looking for something serious too quickly.

Be Honest, Be Yourself, and Have Fun - in that order

Today there are so many sites that it can be overwhelming trying to decide where to start. I've always preferred the paid membership sites—specifically eHarmony and Match. I've always been sure to include a photo of myself in my everyday wheelchair and as an athlete, in some kind of sport chair.

One of the important things to remember when delving into the world of online dating as and individual living with a disability is that many of the people you meet may have little or no knowledge or experience with disability. With this in mind, I always try and make any date feel as comfortable as possible so they feel like they can ask about my life and experiences living with a spinal cord injury. It's not always easy to be inundated with so many questions date after date but it can lead to some amazing conversations and the opportunity for a closer and more open relationship moving forward. In the end, just be honest, be yourself, and have fun!

The longer the conversation the more chances to mess things up or run into awkward confusion. Every time you pick up the phone… jump right into the good stuff. Start with a fun anecdote. Start with a teasing nickname. Find a way to quickly spark an emotion and get her paying full attention at you. You always have to be moving the conversation forward. Think of it like there is a staircase, and at the top of that staircase is the girl sitting naked waiting for you :D Every text you send should be climbing you one step higher on that staircase.

5. Going for the meet-up without sparking emotion

Here is another hard, cold fact. If you ask a woman to hang out, without first sparking and emotion… she will almost always turn you down. Why? It all started with Japanese Kimonos. Geishas took inspiration from delicate flowers and had them stitched onto their silk robes. Then as the world became more traveled, women from all over saw the Geisha's flowers and thought why not us?. Thus, the floral trend began.

In the 1920s, one of the most famous fashion designers brought hats to the stage. That's right, Coco Chanel started her empire by selling headgear. From there she branched out into another trend that is still huge today — menswear.

When more and more women began entering the workforce, Chanel realized that they needed new clothing to work in. This era introduced ladies trousers, along with other pieces like cardigans and jackets that were borrowed from menswear but cut for women.

Katherine Hepburn further popularized the trend by mainly wearing trousers during her motion picture career. Menswear still survives due to its versatility and comfort. If you are headed out on a date where you need to be comfortable, do exactly what they did back then and opt for an Oxford shirt with and oversized blazer.

Militarism

During both the first and second World War, another fashion trend became popular and has remained a staple for fashion houses across the world - militarism. Designers like Burberry became famous because they clothed the soldiers fighting in trench coats and Wellingtons. On the home front, women also chose to wear military-inspired clothing because of its simplicity.

Lauren Hutton made it even more popular by wearing a Burberry trench coat in public. Military-inspired fashion is always popular because of its neutral colors and clean, simple lines. We wear military-inspired capes and boots today for the same reasons, so put on some OD (olive drab) pants and a military style jacket and you are ready for your next date.

A-Line Dress

In the late 1940s, Christian Dior broke into the fashion world with a new idea for women - poise. She introduced Grace Kelly's and Audrey Hepburn's classic A-line dresses with low heels and bows. The frocks were extremely simply done in women's curves and were perfect for the workplace or for hosting a dinner party. The trend never went away and women today look to Kelly and Hepburn for inspiration.

This trend might be the most inspiring for a date ensemble because of its simple feminity and its ability to transcend so many generations. Dress in a pastel A-line dress by Oscar de la Renta and you will look just as good as Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief.

How to Arrive in Style - For Men

A man's guide for packing smart, dressing well and travelling in comfort. You're going on vacation. Great, lucky you, fun in the sun and all that. You'll throw a bunch of stuff in a bag the night before (or for some of you, the morning of), grab something from your closet, board a plane and that will be that. Sorry, that will not be that.

Without thought and a little bit of planning, all that energy you spend manufacturing your particular brand of style will go out the window. Instead of arriving as a debonair explorer you'll get off the plane as a dorky tourist.

Palm Springs, Ibiza, Maui? Wherever you go, you want to turn heads as you saunter off the runway, so what should you wear on the plane? Flying used to mean dressing up and lounging beside a sky bar. Sadly, those days are over, but you don't need to dress down to fly.

Business casual for the plane seems like overkill but it has value: it allows you to wear some of the larger items you might otherwise have to pack, it keeps you warm on over-air-conditioned planes and it ups your chances of being re-assigned to first class.

Chinos or a decent pair of dress shorts along with a cotton, collared, non-iron shirt will keep you comfortable during the flight. Finish with a light blazer and a V-neck sweater. You might think the latter is too much for the beach, but it will work for evenings.

Shoes are important. They need to be functional because you may be walking -or running- between planes in the airport. You need ones that are easily kicked off under the seat while flying to give your toes a bit of freedom. Consider boat shoes or slip-on loafers with some bright socks to keep your fellow travellers -and perhaps Security- amused.

This gives you a decent evening outfit for the trip, as well as loads of extra room in your suitcase. Enough room to consider using a carry-on instead. Just pack a couple of mix-and-match outfits. It can be done, really. Pack all the swimwear you need, undies, PJ's, a pair of decent jeans for evenings, a selection of polo shirts, a hat for the sun plus your toiletries - and those can go in small plastic containers picked up at the pharmacy. Voila, tons of room for duty free on the way home.

In-Flight Skin Saver

Flying can play havoc on your body so here are some tips to keep you looking refreshed when you walk off the plane.

1. Prep your face: Bring a moisturizer to use on the flight, preferably one designed for dry skin to counter the dry air of the plane. And lip balm is a must. The last thing you want getting off the plane is lizard lips.


2. Hydrate: Drink water, lots of it - before you leave, in the iarport and on the plane. You'll be visiting the loo often but consider it an opportunity to stretch your legs. Drinks like coffee and tea will dehydrate, as will those cute little bottles of booze.


3. Power nap: Losing sleep won't just make you look tired, it will impact your immune system. Grab a power nap while flying - 30 minutes will do. If you find flying stresses you out, bring decent noise-cancelling headphones - they'll also cancel any boring seat mates.


4. Eating: You have an internal clock, so if you are going on a long-haul flight, try tricking it and consume food at times that match your destination's local time. It isn't always easy; airlines regulate food breaks fairly strictly, but being friendly with the flight attendant always helps.


5. Perk up: Flying isn't great on hair what with the dry air and the head-rest microbes. Despite not having a shower, you can still clean your locks with a dry shampoo, found at any pharmacy (make sure you use airplane-friendly brands that won't explode!). Spray in and comb out. At the same time, pick up some facial wipes; they'll get rid of shine and perk up your complexion.

With a little pre-planning, your vacation will be all about the heads you turn rather that the jet lag you suffer through.

How to be Happy

1. Ditch busyness.

Figure out how little you can get away with doing and still do a good job, says sociologist and happiness expert Christine Carter in her new book The Sweet Spot: How to Find Your Groove at Home and Work. Let's drop "I'm so busy" as a point of pride in our culture.

2. Take it outside.

Go hiking. Paddle. Surf. Sit on a beach. Leighton recommends her patients cultivate a site-sitting practice, where they return to the same place in nature every day, to reacquaint themselves with the cycles of day/night, the seasons, birth/death/rebirth, and to reflect on how everything in our human experience is cyclical. And remember, turn your phone OFF!

3. Take it off.

Go barefoot as much as you can; recent research into the practice of "earthing" indicates that the electrical energy exchange between our feet and the earth reduces inflammation and cortisol levels, and promotes healing.

4. Practice gratitude.

It's not just an Oprah-ism. The more you can be thankful for, the happier you'll be. Instead of blowing a gasket over the driver who cut you off, be glad you're fast on the brake. Give happy things more space to overpower the negativity bias.

5. Build your tribe.

As much as you go inside to meditate, devote just as much energy to connecting with others. "Few of us are really connected to a tribe, if you will," says Segal. "A sense of community and connection and gratitude is a brake on the anxious mind."

6. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

If you fill your car's gas tank with Diet Coke, you won't make it to Tofino, right? So why fill our bodies with food that doesn't optimize our performance? Figure out how to recalibrate what you take in, because we are systems, and everything that enters the system is processed. And since we're in the detox chamber, let's talk about sleep, the grand dame of system renewal. You need it to consolidate learning, metabolize food, manage anxiety and renew your cells.

7. Meditate.

As little as five minutes twice a day has been shown to create positive changes, says Tamara Lechner, a happiness expert and Chopra-certified meditation instructor who starts each day with 30 minutes of meditation and tacks on another 20 minutes later as space allows. Board Shorts

The Breakdown on Five Natural Sweeteners

Whether or not you have a sweet tooth, odds are you consume sugar on a daily basis. The problem is sugar contains no nutrients, proteins, enzymes, or healthy fats. In fact, the fructose in table sugar causes more than just a crash - it provides empty calories and increases your appetite. The search for alternatives is on, but not all of them are harmless. With that in mind, I ranked the trendiest sweeteners from best to worst.

1. Stevia

This sweetener, which can be purchased as a liquid or powder, comes from the leaves of the stevia plant. With virtually no calories, it can lower both blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Though perfect for sweetening summer beverages like tea and lemonade, stevia has a bitter, metallic aftertaste, which may be its downside. Thankfully, there are multiple brands to choose from.

2. Honey

Natural honey provides disease-fighting antioxidants that may reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. With 40 percent fructose, it can work against weight loss - but don't rule this classic out in small portions. Use honey by drizzling over nuts, adding to milkshakes, or spreading on toast with peanut butter.

3. Yacon Syrup

This sugar substitute is derived from the South American yacon plant. It's high in fructooligosaccharide (wut was dat?) sugar molecules which feed on good bacteria in the intestine. These molecules help fight constipation and benefit your metabolism, potentially leading to weight loss. Similar to molasses in consistency, yacon can be added to oatmeal and gingerbread. Keep in mind, however, that too much of this syrup may cause digestion problems.

4. Xylitol & Erythritol

All sweeteners ending in -ol are sugar alcohols extracted from plant products, which contain less fructose and fewer calories than table sugar. These two are considered safest to use, especially when pure. Purchased as granules or in powdered form, sugar alcohols can be substituted in baked goods like pies and cheesecake. But, consuming excessive amounts of sugar alcohol can cause digestive complications.

5. Agave Syrup

Agave has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, which means it's less likely to spike your blood pressure. Despite this benefit, its fructose level encourages more food consumption through empty calories. Labeled as natural, this syrup is processed and most commonly contains 80 percent fructose, so it's metabolized in the same way as table sugar. If you do choose to consume agave (hopefully in its unprocessed form), it's great in coffee and drizzled over fruit or yogurt.

Planning a wedding is wonderful and stressful at the same time. With the proliferation of wine tastings and wine classes, the craft beer revolution and the resurgence of cocktail culture, a lot of people have some added stress trying to find good wines, beers, and spirits that will impress their guests. But it doesn't have to be stressful right?

Although a wedding -and the party afterwards- is a part of your day and possibly the best party you will ever attend, a lot of decisions you will have to make are going to be for the comfort of your guests and their enjoyment. Most likely, you are going to have some extended family to accommodate, and despite your love of artisan gin and handmade tonic, you'll want to have things on hand to please all your guests.

Stick to Your Budget

It's easy to get swept up in either trying to save a buck or two per bottle or thinking the most expensive wine on the list is the best one. You might be tempted to pay corkage fees and bring your own wine effective at hotels or venues of that type. Aiming for bottles in the middle of the road is usually safe, but unless you have strong feelings about your price per bottle, see the next point. In short, most good venues won't have crummy picks on their list.

Go For the Crowd Pleaser

The most important thing to remember is to go for crowd-pleasing wines that work with a variety of foods or settings. Don't worry that your second cousin is a sommelier or if your uncle only drinks plonk, it's about pleasing the masses. Lighter bodied dry white wines and medium bodied reds without too much tannin are your friends here. Whites such as pinot gris or lightly oaked chardonnays are very versatile, while for reds, chianti or valpolicella are great go-to wines, same with shiraz and red blends in general. If it makes you feel better, almost no one will remember exactly what you chose down the road.

Cocktails

Consider having a welcome cocktail at the reception. Either something the bride and groom like, or something created just for the occasion. This is also a great place to have drinks tied to the wedding theme. I'll tell you right now, there aren't many wines out there that fit a steampunk-themed wedding, or wines that fit with your passion for collecting art deco vases or rock climbing. For outdoor weddings or events outside a licensed venue, the cocktails can be made ahead of time or in a punchbowl - helpful for getting drinks in thirsty guest's hands quickly. Though be sure to have a non alcoholic version for the kids or some guests.

Sparkling Wines

These are tricky wines, the toasts are very important and people love giving them, but most people don't drink champagne or sparkling wine outside of special occasions. My advice is to not worry to much about the wine here. If your budget includes champagne by all means...

If not, look to Cava (from Spain), Cremant (sparkling wine from France), or sparkling wine from Canada or the US. Prosecco is also a solid choice here.

Beers and Spirits

Unless you are hosting the wedding at a private venue, such as home rather than a hotel or such, you most likely won't have to worry too much about beer and the hard stuff. My suggestion if you do?

Pick about 3 beers. Keep them simple, and pick a light beer, a slightly bigger one such as an ale, and maybe an import. With local craft beer being so good and so popular, you might want to consider inviting them to the wedding.

With the hard stuff, if you are supplying it, the retail shop you use should be able to recommend suggested quantities for each, but buy a brand you like, in the price range you are comfortable with. It might be your house bourbon or vodka for a while. If you must have something special, this is the time to get it.

Actually, how much alcohol do you really need?

You know your guests best. If they are quite the bon-vivants, you might need to scale up your numbers, while some groups just don't drink very much. If you are bringing your own alcohol to the venue, ensure that the staff won't just pull the corks on everything ahead of time, and make sure to ask at the store you are purchasing from about returning unopened bottles.

Generally, most average groups will drink about 1 drink per person per hour of the function. But you don't want to run out. A party of about 150 guests will consume about 3 cases of wine (split among white and red), about 15 dozen beer, and about a case or so of mixed spirits. Plus whatever you need for the toasting. Most good liquor stores will have a pretty good idea of the quantities you need, but there are several drink calculators online out there which are helpful.
